I believe we can change the world, starting at home.
I work with many young people. All of them the age I was, when I left Topeka for New York City back in 1988. I see myself in them, and I see a need for strong examples to be set. In 1988 when I moved to the city, I was blissfully unaware of the epidemic just named HIV and AIDS. I moved to the place with probably the most awareness of the disease, and one of the most intense campaigns to inform people of the facts surrounding it. I saw many friends die. I saw many people affected and infected, and at the time I was too afraid to be part of the change.
Last year members of my family and I ran the Chicago Marathon and helped raise $7,000.00 for the American Cancer Society. It affected me greatly, I realized the impact a directed effort can make. I want to do more, and I felt keeping the money raised local could have even more impact on my family, and on the young people in my life. I believe each of us can change the world.
My goal is lofty, but I have faith, and stamina, and I will do my part. I will Put in the miles and the hours. I will need your help to raise the money and awareness. Young people I know, have already committed to helping me in this task. Now I am reaching out to my business colleagues, my neighbors, my friends, and my family to help me, help our community. I am seeking donations for Topeka Aids Project by getting sponsors for every mile of an Iron Distance Race I am participating in in September. I am looking to have each of the 140.6 miles sponsored for $100.00. I am asking people to take one mile or several, but I believe we can reach the goal of $14,000.00, which will be a monumental donation, that will change our community. 100% of money goes to TAP
the Facts:
- HIV does not discriminate. It is not who you are, but what you do that determines whether you can become infected with HIV.
- African American and Hispanic women, who represent less than one-quarter of U.S. women, represent nearly 80% of AIDS cases reported among American women to date.
- Overall, HIV infection is spreading fastest in this country among young people, women, African Americans, and Hispanics.
- Nearly half of the roughly 40,000 Americans newly infected with HIV each year are under the age of 25.
- Statistics show that by the age of 19, at least half of females and 60% of males in this country have engaged in sexual intercourse, and one in six sexually experienced teens has contracted one or more STDs.
- The Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) estimates that there are now over 34 million people living with HIV or AIDS worldwide. Most of them do not know they carry HIV and may be spreading the virus to others. Here in the U.S., nearly one million people have HIV infection or AIDS roughly one out of every 250 people. At least 40,000 Americans become newly infected with HIV each year, and it is estimated that half of all people with HIV in the U.S. have not been tested and do not know they are carrying the virus.
- Since the beginning of the epidemic, AIDS has killed nearly 19 million people worldwide, including some 425,000 Americans. AIDS has replaced malaria and tuberculosis as the world's deadliest infectious disease among adults and is the fourth leading cause of death worldwide.
